November 2006: The worst month for goods transport by road in the US since the last recession
That’s what says Bob Costello, Chief economist of the American Trucking Association, about the 3.6% slow down in tonnage transported by truck in November 2006 compared to October 2006 (which already recorded a 1.6 % fall). Over the year, between November 2005 and November 2006, the index decreased 8.8 % (source ATA.

Road transportation is a very accurate indicator of US economy as it represents 70% of the total tonnage of transported goods. If the decrease in tonnage was to continue over the next two months, this would clearly confirm that the US economy has entered recession. Here is how the Bureau of Labour Statistics of the US department of Labour defines the importance of truck transportation’s evolutions: “During economic downturns, the truck transportation and warehousing industry is one of the first to slow down as orders for goods and shipments decline.” (source US Department of Labor / Bureau of Labor Statistics.
